Inventors in the Kitchen
Modern Kitchen would be a very different place if not for these inventors and their inventions.
Otto Frederick Rohwedder: Mechanical Bread Slicer- ( 1927-28 ) A graduate of Ophthalmology and a jeweller by profession. He was convinced that he could develop a bread slicing machine. So he sold his three jewellery stores to fund his dream project. After developing several prototypes and incurring huge losses, Rohwedder successfully designed a machine that not only sliced the bread but wrapped it too. (PERSEVERANCE)
Charles Perkings Strite : Pop-Up-Toaster- ( 1921 ) Was constantly annoyed that the toast he got at the office cafeteria was always burnt. That’s when he got an idea of an automatic machine that would stop heating when the bread turns brown. He named his invention ‘Toastmaster’. (DETERMINATION)
Stephen Poplawski:Electric Blender- ( 1922 ) Milk Shakeswould’nt be possible but for this device. Poplawski had the idea to put a spinning blade at the bottom of a container, connected to a motor would work. He went on to receive a patent in 1932 for a machine that would reduce fruits and vegetables to a liquid. (CONFIDENCE)
Erza Warner:Can Opener- (1858 ) This crudely shaped bayonet & sickle combo design was widely accepted by the US military for its practical application. Previously, cans were opened using the hammer & chisel or with whatever tools available. (CLARITY)
Percy Spencer:Microwave Oven- ( 1945 ) Was an engineer at the Raytheon Company making magnetrons- a key component of radar systems. One day Spencer was standing in front of an active radar when he noticed the candy bar he had in his pocket had melted. He decided to investigate and experiment. After several attempts, Spencer created the first true Microwave Oven and filed for patent. The first commercially produced Microwave Oven was 6 feet tall, weighed about 750 lbs and costs about US $ 5000 in 1947. (CURIOSITY)
Herbert Johnson: Mixer- ( 1908 ) was an engineer with the Hobart Manufacturing Company. His inspiration came from observing a baker mixing bread dough with a metal spoon. Mixers come in two major variations: hand mixer & stand mixer. (WISDOM)
Dr Carl Von Linde: Refrigerator- ( 1876 ) was a German scientist, engineer and businessman. He discovered a refrigeration cycle and invented the first industrial scale air separation and gas liquefaction processes, which led to first reliable and efficient compressed ammonia refrigerator. Josephine Cochrane: Dishwasher- ( 1886 ) was a frustrated socialite. She loved hosting dinner parties. Her servants ended up chipping and breaking the dishes. So she decided to design & invent a dishwasher to get the dishes clean faster without damaging them. (COURAGE)
Earl Tupper: Tupperware- ( 1945 ) was a chemist with DuPont, who turned inflexible slag leftovers into an airtight plastic container for storing food. He received the patent for this invention. He later sold his company for US $ 16 million in 1958. Shortly, he divorced his wife, gave up US citizenship and bought an island off the coast of Costa Rica. (ELEGANCE)
Alfred Cralle:Ice Cream Scoop- ( 1897 ) As a porter in a drug store and at a hotel, he observed that waiters at the hotel had trouble with ice cream sticking to serving spoons.So he developed an ice cream scoop with a built in scraper to allow one handed operation. He was awarded patent for this simple & functional design. (SIMPLICITY)
